How are the glasses made?

The 3D-printed frames are made using an innovative 3D-printing process called Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). In this process, polyamide dust is 3D printed layer by layer using the latest laser technology to create a durable frame. Excess material is collected and reused for printing the next pair of glasses. Afterwards, the frames are gently sanded in a tumbler – without abrading away the characteristic surface texture created by 3D printing. The frames are still white up to this point, so the next step is to dye them. A wide spectrum of colours is possible. Finally, the frames are given a special coating that protects the material from ultraviolet light and perspiration, while simultaneously making it optimally compatible with the wearer’s skin.

Where are the glasses manufactured?

All our 3D-printed frames are manufactured by our carefully selected partner in Poland, whose extremely high production standards guarantee unique frames of the highest quality. The beta titanium temples and nose bridge are handmade at a traditional eyewear factory in Japan.

What are the advantages of 3D-printed glasses?

High-quality polyamide dust is used to create ultralight and highly durable frames that meet and exceed all the demands of everyday life. Furthermore, the 3D printing process is resource-friendly because excess material is collected and reused for printing the next pair of glasses.

How can I configure my personal pair of glasses?

Each pair of glasses in the Archetypes collection is unique. To perfectly adapt the fit and wearing comfort to meet your personal needs, the customized models of the Archetypes collection have to be configured in collaboration with the trained employees in our VIU stores.

Is the Archetypes collection sustainable?

Especially in the optical industry, 3D printing is much more environmentally friendly than conventional manufacturing methods. Only as much material as necessary is used to produce each frame. Surplus material is collected and reused for printing the next frame, so this efficient manufacturing method generates no waste. This makes the 3D printing process particularly sustainable from a resource-saving point of view.

Which lenses can I have inserted into the frames?

Whether simple corrective, multifocal or sunglass lenses, the frames of the Archetypes collection can be combined with all our lenses. Let our staff advise you on which lens best suits your personal needs.
