Services at VIU

Your professional eye test

Our trained opticians can check your eyes and determine your exact visual acuity in almost all of our VIU stores. This service is free of charge and is suitable for people who already wear corrective glasses, use varifocals or simply want to have their eyesight tested. Your prescription is measured in dioptres and is important for both corrective glasses and sunglasses.

When should I have an eye test done?

We recommend an eye test at least every two years to check for possible visual defects (usually short-sightedness or long-sightedness) at an early stage. A change in vision can become noticeable through various symptoms and should be checked by qualified opticians and ophthalmologists. So, if you notice signs such as headaches, we recommend that you make an appointment as soon as possible. Even if you feel that your vision has only deteriorated at close range or when driving, for example, you might still need glasses.

We have put together a small checklist for you so that you can assess whether you may have a visual impairment.

Checklist

You have to squint or can’t see clearly anymore
You have to hold your phone or book further away to read
You spend a lot of time in front of screens
You experience daily headaches or even dizziness
You have tired or dry and sore eyes
You own a pair of glasses, but feel that they don't fit properly

How do I prepare for my eye test?

Please don’t wear contact lenses for at least 12 hours before your appointment (please allow for 24 hours for hard lenses). Contact lenses influence the geometry of the cornea and therefore the visual performance during the eye test. This can lead to falsified test results.

If you have an optical record card, an old prescription or existing glasses, please bring these with you to your test. Having this reference allows us to determine how your vision has changed.

What is the procedure?

When it’s time for your appointment, you’ll be welcomed by our store staff and accompanied to the separate eye test room. Here, we can carry out your eye test in a relaxed and calm environment. Our qualified opticians will determine your exact visual acuity using a combination of different professional measurement methods. If you wish, we can clarify which lenses are ideal for you in an individual needs analysis. Your new prescription will be conveniently stored in your personal VIU customer account, so that you can access it at any time and from anywhere.

Immediately after your eye test—or on another day—, our staff will be happy to help you find a frame which emphasises your personality best.
