What are varifocal eyeglasses?

Unlike simple corrective lenses, varifocals lenses are subdivided into different vision zones. The upper zone of the lens is ideal for distance vision, the lower zone for near vision, and the middle zone for objects at intermediate distances. As the name suggests, varifocals provide smooth transitions and continuously sharp vision at all distances. Thanks to the different vision zones, eyewear equipped with varifocal lenses can correct not only defective vision of distant objects, but also presbyopia, i.e. the inability to focus on nearby objects that usually begins between the ages of 40 to 50.

When do I need varifocals?

If you constantly need to switch between different pairs of eyeglasses for viewing nearby and distant objects, and if you are tired of constantly taking off one pair and putting on another, then it’s time for you to own a pair of VIU varifocal eyeglasses. With just one pair of glasses, you’ll cover all visual ranges and keep a sharp focus on everything – at every distance.

FAQ about varifocal eyeglasses

Can I buy my varifocals online?

For varifocals, an individual fitting and measurement by an optician is necessary in order to provide you with an optimal visual experience. For varifocals, we recommend a visit to the store. In a conversation on site, we can address your individual needs and visual habits and take them into account when we fit your varifocal eyeglasses.

Does wearing glasses weaken your vision?

No. Eyewear that fits properly does not make your eyes lazy or weaken your vision. The notion that eyeglasses spoil the eyes is a myth! Eyewear with the correct prescription only corrects the existing deficit in your eyes. In fact, the opposite is true: making do without glasses despite poor eyesight can have negative effects.

What can I wear varifocals for?

Varifocals are all-rounders. Depending on the strength of the addition, you can wear them without any problems for almost all activities in daily life. Depending on your individual needs or circumstances, we recommend additional glasses for watching TV, for your workplace or for sports. Especially for digital everyday life, we recommend that you supplement your varifocals with a pair of Relax glasses, which are specially designed for the close-up range.

Can I work at my computer with varifocals?

Yes and no. You can see your PC’s screen sharply through the middle part of the lenses when you wear varifocal glasses. But varifocals are not optimal for viewing computer screens. It is advantageous to have a separate pair of workplace glasses that give you a wider field of vision for your computer and thus for the close-up range, so you can look at your PC or laptop while keeping your head and body in a comfortable posture – without developing neck pain or tension.

Can I wear varifocals while driving?

Varifocals are perfect for driving. VIU’s Individual varifocal lenses give you a good view of your surroundings. You can clearly see everything in the rear-view mirror and you also have a good view of your dashboard and navigation system through the intermediate area of the lenses. Nevertheless, you should be careful when driving for the first time with your new varifocals because you might not yet be able to judge distances correctly.

Can I climb stairs when I’m wearing varifocal eyewear?

Yes, you can climb up and down stairs while wearing varifocal eyeglasses. All you need to do at first is adjust your head to suit your line of vision: i.e. lower your head when you look down at the stairs.

Do frames for progressive lenses have to be larger?

No, the frames of varifocal eyewear do not necessarily have to be larger. We recommend a lens height of at least 21 to 25 mm to provide enough space for the different fields of vision provided by varifocal lenses.

What is the difference between single vision lenses and varifocal lenses?

Single vision lenses can only compensate for one type of defective vision: either short-sightedness or long-sightedness. Varifocal technology, on the other hand, replaces at least two pairs of glasses (for viewing distant and nearby objects) in your everyday life. Varifocal lenses are much more complex and costlier to manufacture than single vision lenses.

How long will it take for me to get used to varifocals?

Every new visual impression or every new pair of glasses (dioptre or lens design) has to be processed by the brain, and this takes different amounts of time. Most people who wear glasses grow accustomed to their new lenses after wearing them for just a few days.
